No Increase in Petrol & Diesel Prices; Government Clarifies

Updated: 04:46 PM

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) confirmed that petrol and diesel prices have not increased. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma urged the public not to believe rumours circulating online. She stated that 26 States have received 22,000 tonnes of commercial LPG and 2.5 lakh new PNG connections have been sanctioned in the last 25 days.

The government also issued a directive mandating households to switch to piped natural gas (PNG) where available; LPG supply may be discontinued otherwise. This is aimed at reducing dependence on imported LPG and expanding domestic gas infrastructure.

Analysis & Background

India’s LPG supply is strained due to disruptions from West Asia. Approximately 60% of India’s LPG is imported, with 90% of shipments transiting the Strait of Hormuz. To mitigate risk, the government prioritised household supply and cut industrial allocations.

Localized panic buying caused queues in some states even though national fuel stocks are stable. Oil marketing companies (BPCL, IOCL, HPCL) affirmed no shortage exists and urged citizens not to hoard.

Adoption of piped natural gas (PNG) is being accelerated to reduce reliance on imported LPG and enhance energy security.

Fuel & LPG Supply Status by Region

Region / State Petrol Status Diesel Status LPG Status
Telangana ≈20,000 KL available Continuous supply Stocks adequate; normal distribution
Madhya Pradesh Adequate Adequate Normal distribution
Goa Stable Stable Regular supply
Delhi No shortage No shortage Monitoring hoarding issues

Consumer Guidance

Petrol & diesel prices are unchanged. Consumers should rely only on official sources and avoid panic buying. PNG adoption is recommended where available. LPG refill timelines remain 25 days (urban) and 45 days (rural).

Authorities continue monitoring fuel supply chains to prevent illegal LPG sales and black marketing.
