Kansas City, July 12: Defending champions Argentina produced another memorable performance to defeat Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal and secure a place in the semifinals. The South American side had to work hard against a determined Swiss team before late goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez sealed victory. Argentina will now face England in a blockbuster semifinal as they continue their bid to defend the World Cup title. 

Argentina made a bright start and controlled possession from the opening whistle. Lionel Messi looked dangerous whenever he had the ball, while midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández dictated the pace of the game. The decision was strongly protested by the Swiss players and coaching staff, but the referee stood by the VAR recommendation. The dismissal forced Switzerland to play the rest of the match with one player fewer.

Argentina immediately tried to make use of their numerical advantage. Messi continued to create chances with clever passes, while Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez kept testing the Swiss defence. However, Switzerland showed great determination and defended bravely. Kobel produced more excellent saves, and the defenders blocked several dangerous shots to keep the score level.

After 90 minutes, neither side could find a winner, and the quarterfinal moved into extra time. Argentina controlled possession during the additional 30 minutes, while Switzerland concentrated on defending and hoping for another counter-attack despite playing with ten men.

Deep into stoppage time of extra time, Argentina launched a quick counter-attack, and Lautaro Martínez calmly finished from close range to make it 3-1. The goal confirmed Argentina’s victory and ended Switzerland’s impressive World Cup campaign. Although Lionel Messi did not score, he played an important role throughout the match. His accurate passing, leadership and assist for the opening goal once again showed why he remains one of the team’s most influential players. Julián Álvarez impressed with his energy and produced the decisive moment with his stunning extra-time strike, while Lautaro Martínez finished the game with an important late goal.

Switzerland left the tournament with plenty of pride despite the defeat. The team defended courageously for long periods and challenged the reigning champions throughout the match. Dan Ndoye’s equaliser gave Switzerland hope of reaching a historic semifinal, but the red card and Argentina’s quality in extra time eventually proved decisive.

Argentina’s head coach praised his players for remaining patient under pressure and finding the breakthrough when it mattered most. Switzerland’s coach expressed disappointment with the controversial red-card decision but also praised his players for their fighting spirit against one of the tournament favourites. 

With this victory, Argentina remain on course to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title. Their next challenge will be England, who also needed extra time to defeat Norway in their quarterfinal.
