Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, contesting from his stronghold Jalukbari, headed towards a comfortable victory, strengthening his position as one of the most influential leaders in the Northeast.

Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi contested from Jorhat, while AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal returned to state politics from Binnakandi. Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi sought re-election from Sibsagar.

The April 9 polling recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.91%, the highest in Assam’s electoral history. Female voter participation stood at 86.5%, marking a new milestone.

Pradyut Bordoloi, a former Congress MP who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party shortly before the Assam Assembly elections, secured victory from Dispur by a margin of 49,667 votes, marking a significant political shift in the constituency.

Bordoloi defeated Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami and independent candidate Jayanta Kumar Das. He polled 1,03,337 votes, while Goswami secured 53,670 votes, according to the final counting figures.

A Congressman for more than five decades, Bordoloi joined the BJP in mid-March this year, less than a month before polling was held in Assam on April 9. He had earlier been elected to the Lok Sabha from Nagaon in both the 2019 and 2024 general elections.

State Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi has lost his debut Assembly election from the Jorhat constituency, dealing a significant setback to the party in Assam.

BJP’s Hitendranath Goswami defeated Gaurav Gogoi by a margin of 23,182 votes.

Despite Jorhat being widely regarded as a traditional stronghold of the Gogoi family, the BJP retained the seat, with Hitendranath Goswami winning for another term as the sitting MLA.

This was Gaurav Gogoi’s first attempt at entering the Assam Assembly. The Congress leader had earlier represented Jorhat in the Lok Sabha and played a key role in national politics.

The result reflects the BJP’s continued dominance in Upper Assam and highlights the Congress party’s ongoing struggle to reclaim key constituencies in the state.
